What you well do

The Head of Self-Care has 3 primary areas of responsibility:

  • A representative of the Marketing Leadership Team and contributor to the:
    • Setting overall portfolio strategy and alignment with the respective Hub portfolio Team.
    • Ensuring the attainment of financial obligations in the short and long term.
    • Ensuring the smooth running of the day-to-day business.
    • Ensuring integration and alignment between the various business disciplines namely marketing, sales, financial services, business development, Regulatory Affairs, R&D etc.
  • The management (co-ordination, leadership, motivation and development) of his/her team members to ensure its smooth running and its achievement of the long and short-term objectives of the portfolio activities across South and Sub-Saharan Africa:
    • Clear resourcing, structures and processes for the Self Care brand team
    • Support and advocate training and development programs to continually develop the marketing capabilities and competencies – specifically on Science of Brand Growth.
    • Support the implementation and training on compliance culture, particularly relating to consumer, shopper and professional marketing.
    • Recruitment and retention of the Self Care team aligned with the strategic direction of the business.
  • To provide the region with marketing guidelines and strategic frameworks with which to grow the Self Care brands aligned to the BDT strategy:
    • Clear ownership and development of the brand portfolio and geographic prioritization in line with the overall business strategy.
    • Identify and align on the NPD pipeline, resources and timings across the business and in line with the regional/ global strategies.

What we are looking for

Required Qualifications

  • Relevant business degree at a recognized institution - honours degree with specialization in Marketing preferable
  • MBA would be advantageous

Desired Qualifications

  • 7-10 years marketing experience in an equivalent role, responsible for a portfolio of brands (at least 3 of which must be in FMCG, Self Care/ Pharma, Personal Care marketing, including:
  • Solid experience in overall marketing strategy development and implementation
  • Strong leadership ability, with an appreciation for an inclusive, servant leadership approach
  • Broad product management experience
  • Experience in external marketing trend analysis, eCommerce and digital analytics
  • Classical marketing experience – integrated marketing campaigns delivery
  • Sales experience is preferable, but not essential
  • Ability to develop fit for purpose and forward-thinking strategy
  • Analytical and results-driven
  • Team leadership with a focus on team development, coaching and driving performance
  • Effective written and verbal communication
  • End-to-end thinking, clear judgement and sound decision making
  • Ability to operate effectively despite ambiguity, showing resilience and the ability to adapt  

Outputs, Competency and Skills Requirement:

  • Drive the business at a strategic level ensuring the long-term and ongoing success of the business in line with the overall vision and strategic imperatives:
    • To provide input to the head of marketing with regards to driving the business at a strategic level.
    • To ensure that the portfolio vision and strategic imperatives are understood by the marketing team and the key service departments.
    • To oversee and provide strategic direction to the Self Care team, ensuring that the marketing plans of the various categories are in line with the strategic direction of the business vision.
    • To ensure the implementation of breakthrough strategies that will sustained and / or growth the business over the strategic period.
    • To take cognizance of the greater regional strategy, ensuring that marketing opportunities are optimized across the marketing function.
    • To ensure that the business is provided with clear marketing guidelines and brand frameworks with which to launch, grow and develop the identified brands.
    • To liaise with regional teams on the following levels maximizing knowledge sharing, driving strategies for the local business, leveraging regional networks, relationships or strategies when required.
  • Playing a leadership and directional role in the financial and marketing planning process and contributing to the short and long-term profitability of the business:
    • Ensuring that the marketing team adequately trends the marketplace, future unit and value sales of our brands and that these form the basis for business growth and development.
    • To ensure the marketing business plan and its role in the development of the strategic P&Ls is justified.
    • To manage the business financials (P&Ls), and have influence over the expense lines outside of the control of marketing.
    • To guide the long-term profitability of the business unit.
    • To deliver the marketing inputs and strategies for the annual plan submission to regional management.
  • To ensure that annual marketing plans are compiled, and implemented in line with the business objectives:
    • To ensure that all strategic and brand marketing plans are formulated timeously by the relevant team, with clear business and marketing objectives/ goals.
    • To ensure that the above are presented to management team and buy-in is gained.
    • To ensure the successful implementation of the plans by the marketing team, and the relevant evaluation of marketing activities in line with goals.
  • Maintenance and management of the business P&Ls, ensuring business sales and profit targets are met in the short and long term:
    • To deliver to the business monthly and full year P&Ls estimates at both a business, category and key brand level, across the region.
    • To ensure a level of accountability with the Brand Managers with regards to their relevant category and key brand P&Ls across the South African and Sub-Saharan markets.
    • Monitoring and management of the full financial P&Ls and relevant expense lines on a monthly basis.
  • Develop and grow relationships with key suppliers / agencies to ensure the business needs are fulfilled, and delivery is to expectation and in line with strategic direction of the business:
    • Manage the performance of key existing suppliers such as the advertising agencies.
    • Ensure the agencies have a clear understanding of company’s requirements, business expectations and operation.
    • Ensure open and consistent communication between the product management team and the agencies.
  • To foster an environment of innovation, new idea generation and creativity:
    • To encourage the marketing team to be innovative.
    • Challenging the status quo and continuously improving the way things are done.
    • Implement the business strategy aligned to digital and ecommerce competency building.
  • Strong Decision-Making Ability:
    • To understand the business and the relevant marketplace well in order to make timeous and effective decisions.
    • To objectively handle pressure and /or crisis situations through careful analysis, assessment of the situation, risks and opportunities, and the provision of solution-based recommendations to the management team.
    • To lead and coach the marketing team to do likewise as pertains to their relevant category responsibilities.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills:
    • Ability to write strategic documentation, proposals, and reports that are concise and accurate within a business context.
    • Clearly and consistently communicating with all relevant parties in a timely manner.
    • Good Listening skills.
    • Ability to present marketing information, ensuring that all presentations result in the required objectives and actionable factors being understood and implemented.
    • Working with and influencing others, not under your direct control, to meet the required brand objectives, through the building of relationships, motivation and leadership.
    • Strong relationship building and effective communication skills required with regional and global colleagues in the driving forward of the overall marketing strategy.
  • Effective management of the Marketing Function:
    • Ensure role clarity and goal setting across the marketing team.
    • Day-to-day management of direct reports, and the greater marketing team, towards agreed performance and business results – providing guidance and direction.
    • Providing regular feedback to direct reports and the greater marketing team on both positive and poor performance.
    • Conduct development discussions, put in place development plans and monitor these accordingly to set objectives to allow the opportunity to develop the team’s skill base.
    • Develop a succession plan for the marketing group and manage accordingly.
    • Managing renumeration for the marketing team.
  • Leadership:
    • Share the vision and long-term objectives with the Essential Health and Skin Health team, inspiring this vision and creating common goals across the team.
