What you will do

The Principal Scientist, Oral Care R&D will independently lead and develop new regional and/or global formulations linked to the Listerine brand strategy and innovation pipeline.  They may also implement commercial innovation (regional rollouts), lead regional and global projects / programs providing strategic and operational execution, and collaborate with cross functional partners to ensure all timeline deliverables are met.  They will develop technical expertise in Oral Care formulations and processes, exemplify technical rigor in documentation, analysis, and risk tasking to craft R&D recommendations to senior leadership.  They will become a technical mentor for our team’s junior scientists.

The Principal Scientist, Oral Care R&D is responsible for:

  • New product development, including design of experiments, lab formulation activities, stability analysis, and define critical process parameters during development

  • Shapes new projects and programs linked to brand strategy and innovation pipeline

  • Lead product development execution strategies in collaboration with cross-functional partners from concept to commercialization

  • Delivers subject matter expertise in formula development / ingredient technology through incorporation of consumer, category, business, and technical insights

  • Applies scientific fundamentals and creative problem-solving skills to solve technical issues, including complex formulation, stability, and process issues

  • Proactively identifies project obstacles / technical risks, troubleshoots issues by evaluating potential solutions, and promptly reports the obstacle / issue to management with a recommended using data & insights driven risk-taking and decision making

  • Analyze & translate key trends into insights, understand our competitive set, and how our products, claims, and/or communication can be improved on points of uniqueness and differentiation to truly delight the consumer

  • Plan and prioritize multiple projects / programs to meet deliverables by monitoring progress of ongoing activities and communicating status updates to relevant stakeholders

  • Maintain accurate and organized records of project documents, data, and materials

  • Manage routine organizational processes and complexity

  • Draft and complete technical documents such as peer reviewed manuscripts, development summary reports, specifications, patent fillings

  • Follow established standards & processes (i.e. GDP, GLP) to ensure the department meets all quality, safety, and regulatory requirements

  • Responsibilities will also include technical mentorship and development of junior level scientists and co-ops


What we are looking for

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Engineering, Pharmacy with pharmaceutical or consumer (cosmetics, OTC) experience

  • Minimum of 8 years of related experience or a Master’s degree with 4 years of related experience or a pHD Degree with 2 years of industry experience

  • Good technical foundation of formulated products including micro emulsions, surfactants, suspensions, structured liquids, and an understanding of material chemistry

  • Experience in formulation or product development with cosmetics and OTC products

  • Strong technical and leadership skills

  • Critical thinking and comprehensive business acumen

  • Ability to partner effectively across a diverse set of business partners and customers to deliver key results in a timely manner

  • Detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage multiple tasks

  • Strong technical writing skills that facilitate the creation of documents that are complete & accurate

  • Proficient oral and written communication skills

  • Effective presentations skills that are used to communicate clearly & informatively

  • MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) proficiency

Desired Qualifications:

  • Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Pharmacy

  • Experience with consumer products, such as oral care products

  • Formulation experience with oral care products such as mouthwash and/or toothpaste

  • Experience leading global projects and working with global teams

  • Ability to influence decision-making at executive levels within and outside the organization

  • Effective leadership in ambiguous, conflicting, and complex situations

  • Familiarity with cGMP and other regulatory requirements

What’s in it for you

Annual base salary for new hires in this position ranges:

$127,075.00 - $179,400.00

This takes into account a number of factors including work location, the candidate’s skills, experience, education level & other job-related factors.
